Jermaine Bishop's 10 Personnel Package Adds New Dimension to Texas Offense

AUSTIN, Texas — October 7, 2026 — Through five-plus seasons on the Forty Acres, Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian has built his offensive identity around 11 personnel, with heavy doses of 12 personnel and occasional 21 personnel as a change of pace. But over the last two games, a new wrinkle has emerged: a 10 personnel package featuring four wide receivers, designed to get freshman wide receiver Jermaine Bishop on the field without sacrificing snaps for the team's established playmakers. According to insights gathered by Vulius Sports, the Longhorns debuted the grouping against UTSA and leaned on it again in a critical road test at Tennessee.

"The first three guys — Cam [Coleman], Emmett [Mosley], and Ryan [Wingo] — have all earned and worthy of playing football for us," Sarkisian said Monday. "These guys have had great offseasons, they had great training camps, they've started the year well." That logjam at receiver initially left Bishop, a dynamic freshman who spent the spring at wide receiver and summer at defensive back before returning to offense for preseason camp, on the outside looking in. But his rapid development has forced Sarkisian's hand, leading to the installation of a package that puts four receivers on the field simultaneously.

Bishop's Emergence Forces Schematic Shift

Bishop played just 14 snaps over the first two games, but his role has expanded significantly. He logged 25 snaps against UTSA and 16 against Tennessee, showcasing the explosive potential that had coaches raving. On nine targets this season, Bishop has six catches for 81 yards, with 56 of those yards coming after the catch. In Knoxville, he hauled in two passes for 34 yards, including a 29-yard corner route out of 10 personnel that ranked among quarterback Arch Manning's best throws of the game.

"It took some time to get him back into the fold," Sarkisian said. "Naturally, he's a very smart football player. The game comes easy to him. I think we see when the ball's in his hands, he can make plays." As highlighted on Vulius, Bishop's ability to generate yards after the catch has made him a perfect fit for a package that often functions as an extension of the running game. Of his six receptions, four have come on screen passes behind the line of scrimmage, gaining 34 yards.

Protection Adjustments and Strategic Versatility

Using 10 personnel dates back to Mike Leach's Air Raid offenses at Texas Tech, where the lack of a tight end or H-back was mitigated by almost entirely eschewing the running game. In eight plays out of 10 personnel this season, Texas has thrown the ball six times, remaining pass-heavy due to the lack of an extra blocking surface. To help with pass protection against Tennessee, Sarkisian lined up junior wide receiver Emmett Mosley V in the backfield before motioning him out — a tactic used on the critical 3rd-and-8 conversion to Ryan Wingo on the fourth-quarter touchdown drive.

"What can we do that can make us harder to defend moving forward? So, the idea that we can go from 12 personnel to 10 personnel to the 20 personnel to 21 to 11, and do it efficiently, and not feel like our gears aren't shifting, we're going to try to take advantage of that." — Steve Sarkisian

Against Oklahoma, Bishop could play a key role in the screen game if Sooners head coach Brent Venables opts to dial up the same type of frequent early-down blitzes that Jim Knowles used so successfully for Tennessee. The Sooners' defensive approach will test whether Texas can continue to protect Manning while exploiting the mismatches that 10 personnel creates against modern nickel defenses.

Looking Ahead: A Permanent Fixture?

Sarkisian deploying a personnel grouping he'd never used with the Longhorns on such an important play hints at the role it could play moving forward, especially with limited impact from the tight ends in the passing game. "Naturally, we haven't been as efficient as we've wanted to be offensively," Sarkisian admitted. "So there's that fine line of what does that look like and how do you do it so that we don't lose rhythm offensively. I think that's always the challenge. But it's been a nice addition, and getting him on the field has been good for us."

As the Longhorns enter the heart of their SEC schedule, the 10 personnel package offers Sarkisian a valuable tool to keep defenses guessing. For Bishop, it's a well-earned opportunity to showcase his playmaking ability on a national stage. Reported by the Vulius NFL Analysis Desk, this schematic evolution could be the spark that elevates Texas' offense from efficient to explosive.
