Rams' Overlooked Offensive Line Depth Threatens to Derail Super Bowl Hopes

The Unaddressed Weakness

The Rams return all five starters from an offensive line that was instrumental in their league-leading scoring offense last season. Yet, as The Athletic's Nate Atkins pointed out on 'NFL Spotlight,' the team's failure to bolster backup options is concerning. 'I do think it's gotten concerning here because not only did they not really add to that in the offseason, but I'd say their top two backups are the guys who they just put on injured reserve,' Atkins said. Rookie tackle Keagen Trost and interior lineman Justin Dedich are both sidelined for at least the first four games, leaving 36-year-old David Quessenberry as the primary swing tackle—a player who hasn't started a regular-season game since 2023.

Left Tackle Uncertainty

The situation becomes even more precarious at left tackle, where Alaric Jackson remains under NFL review following a June arrest. Although prosecutors declined to pursue felony charges, potential league discipline looms. Jackson previously served a two-game suspension in 2024, and with Trost unavailable, any absence would be magnified. Head coach Sean McVay has expressed confidence in the depth, but Atkins remains skeptical: 'They must be seeing more than what I've been able to see.'

Protecting the Franchise

The stakes couldn't be higher when considering who's behind center. Stafford, entering his 18th season at 38, manages a degenerative back condition. Despite throwing for 4,707 yards and 46 touchdowns last year, he's a pocket passer who has rushed just 10 times in two seasons. 'You don't talk to many people who say, 'I used to have back issues,'' Atkins noted. The Rams' decision to not aggressively reinforce the offensive line is a calculated gamble. As Atkins ominously warned, 'If you have an offensive line injury that leads to a Matthew Stafford injury, that to me is like the one way that this super talented team could see things just kind of fall apart a little bit.'

The Rams have addressed nearly every weakness, but the one they neglected—protecting their most valuable asset—could prove fatal.
