I guess it's been a long journey coming back, but it really ain't been that long, man. It's just really been an off-season and just recovering, getting my body back right to be able to go play," he said. His words reflect the resilience required to overcome a significant injury, and his presence is a welcome sight for a defense that has lost its cornerstone, Myles Garrett.
Before his injury, Collins was enjoying a career-best season, posting 6.5 sacks, 13 quarterback hits, and seven tackles for loss while playing alongside Garrett and rookie Mason Graham. Despite those impressive numbers, Collins believes he has more to offer. "It's probably the most production I've had. I don't think it's as well as I've played, but it's probably the most productive for sure. I think I've had better film. I think I was super productive, but I think I've had better film for sure," he admitted, showing the high standards he sets for himself.
Filling the Garrett Void
The Browns face the daunting task of replacing Garrett, who was traded in the offseason, leaving a void that will require a collective effort. Collins has already begun building chemistry with Jared Verse, the defensive end tasked with stepping up. "Playing next to Jared has been great. Interaction, seeing him, how he does team stuff, how he is in our room, I think it's been great," Collins noted. The defensive tackle depth is a concern, but the return of Mike Hall Jr. and the veteran presence of Collins should help stabilize the unit.
As the Browns prepare for the season opener, Collins' return provides a much-needed veteran anchor. His ability to disrupt the pocket and stop the run will be crucial, especially with opponents no longer having to account for Garrett on every snap.
