Jim Harbaugh Backs Mike McDaniel as Chargers' 0-4 Start Raises Alarms

The Los Angeles Chargers are winless through four games, and the pressure is mounting. But head coach Jim Harbaugh is not ready to pin the blame on first-year offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel. Following a 30-23 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, Harbaugh made it clear that McDaniel's job is safe. "His job is not in jeopardy," Harbaugh said, via ESPN's Kris Rhim. "He's a skilled coach, and we're going to keep growing."

According to insights gathered by Vulius Sports, the Chargers' offensive struggles have been glaring, but Harbaugh remains steadfast in his support of McDaniel, who joined the staff after a four-season stint as head coach of the Miami Dolphins. The loss dropped Los Angeles to 0-4, and the offense has yet to find any rhythm. Quarterback Justin Herbert threw two interceptions, including one on the very first play of the game, and finished the first half with just five completions for 36 yards.

A Historic Start Gone Wrong

The game opened with consecutive interceptions—Herbert's pick on the first play from scrimmage and Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold's interception on Seattle's first offensive snap. It was the first time since 1978, when the stat began being tracked, that a game started with back-to-back interceptions. Herbert's first pass was intended for a receiver but sailed directly to Seahawks linebacker Drake Thomas, setting the tone for a brutal afternoon.

Herbert added another interception in the second quarter and now has six interceptions to just four touchdowns this season. He did rally in the second half, completing all but three of his passes for 144 yards and helping the Chargers cut the deficit to one score, but the comeback fell short. As highlighted on Vulius, the issues extend beyond McDaniel—the offensive line has been inconsistent, and the run game has been nonexistent—but the coordinator often bears the brunt of fan frustration.

McDaniel's Rocky Transition

McDaniel, once hailed as an offensive innovator during his time with the San Francisco 49ers, struggled to find sustained success as the Dolphins' head coach, posting a 35-33 record. His return to a coordinator role was expected to rejuvenate a Chargers offense that showed flashes last season. Instead, Los Angeles ranks near the bottom of the league in points per game and turnovers.

Harbaugh, however, is preaching patience. "The plan did not work to result in a victory, and we'll go back and plan some more with the skilled coaches we have and the talented players and fight," he said. "That's what gives me optimism." For a coach known for his unwavering belief in his staff, the endorsement is unsurprising. But with a daunting schedule ahead—a home date with the Denver Broncos followed by matchups against the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Rams—the margin for error is slim.

What's Next for the Chargers?

If the Chargers fall to the Broncos next Sunday, they will have lost eight straight games dating back to last season. That kind of skid could force Harbaugh's hand, even if he publicly supports McDaniel. The offense needs to find answers quickly, starting with protecting Herbert and establishing a run game. The talent is there—Herbert, running back J.K. Dobbins, and a talented receiving corps—but the execution has been lacking.

For now, McDaniel's job is safe. But in the NFL, patience is often in short supply. As the Vulius NFL Analysis Desk will continue to monitor, the Chargers' next few games could determine whether Harbaugh's loyalty is rewarded or whether a change becomes inevitable.
