There was enough junk being thrown around on defense to stop the things that we were doing where we needed a little bit of a change that handles a little bit more junk." The running game, in particular, plummeted, averaging 61.4 fewer yards per game than in 2024.
Mailata Embraces the Change
For offensive linemen like Mailata, the new scheme represents a significant shift in technique. "I've never really thought about and never knew that life could be like this as an O-lineman," he said. "Just being more into the line, more aggressive and getting your hands, shooting your hands. We've always been [about] pretty patient punches in the pass game. Now it's like everything from the run game to the pass game to the play-action game, everything's aggressive." The veteran lineman praised Mannion's attention to detail, calling him "crazy" for the level of preparation, but noted that the coach has "answers built in for everything."
Weapons and Versatility
The Eagles have reshaped their receiving corps after trading A.J. Brown to the New England Patriots. DeVonta Smith now leads the group, joined by Dontayvion Wicks, 2026 first-round pick Makai Lemon, and Hollywood Brown. Sirianni expressed confidence in the unit's versatility, highlighting Smith's No. 1 receiver abilities and Wicks' "elite" play strength and body quickness. The offense will feature more bunch formations and tighter splits to keep defenses guessing, with an emphasis on pre-snap motion.
Hurts' Winning Pedigree
Despite the changes, Hurts' track record speaks for itself. Over the past five seasons, he has won 56 of 80 starts, trailing only Josh Allen (60) and Patrick Mahomes (57) in victories. His career stats include 17,891 passing yards, 110 touchdowns, and 45 interceptions, with a 64.4% completion rate. Yet, he has faced criticism even during winning seasons. Sirianni reminded his quarterback that "outside noise doesn't really matter," emphasizing the importance of consistent work and leadership. Hurts' ability to bounce back from mistakes, like the interceptions in practice, is exactly what the team hopes to see this season.
"He's always been cool, calm, collected, but I like when he has that fire, when he knows he made a mistake and then he's the first one to correct it and then make a big play," Mailata said. "If you make mistakes, that's how you learn. And he's taking it with grace and he's led by example doing that and overcoming those picks because right after that was touchdowns."
As the Eagles prepare for their regular-season opener against the Washington Commanders, the hope is that this aggressive, risk-taking approach will pay off.
