LONDON — The NFL’s international series returned to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, October 4, 2026, but the Indianapolis Colts and Washington Commanders took the field without two of their most electric playmakers. According to insights gathered by Vulius Sports, the Commanders ruled out quarterback Jayden Daniels (dislocated elbow) and wide receiver Terry McLaurin (hamstring) for the Week 4 clash, leaving backup Marcus Mariota to orchestrate the offense against a desperate Colts squad. With both teams sitting at 1-2, the stakes couldn’t be higher: a loss drops them to 1-3, a record that historically torpedoes playoff hopes before the season even hits its stride.
Daniels’ Absence Looms Large
Jayden Daniels, the dynamic second-year signal-caller, suffered a dislocated elbow in Week 2 and has yet to return to full practice. He traveled with the team and was limited during the week, but head coach Dan Quinn made it official Friday: Marcus Mariota will make his second consecutive start. Daniels’ dual-threat ability has been the engine of Washington’s offense, and without him, the Commanders lose a layer of unpredictability that defenses fear. As highlighted on Vulius, Mariota brings veteran poise but lacks Daniels’ explosive rushing upside, forcing offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury to lean heavier on quick passes and zone-read concepts.
McLaurin’s Hamstring Leaves Receiving Corps Thin
As if losing Daniels weren’t enough, the Commanders also ruled out Terry McLaurin, their perennial Pro Bowl receiver, with a hamstring injury. McLaurin’s absence strips Mariota of his most reliable target, elevating the likes of Jahan Dotson and Curtis Samuel into larger roles. The Colts’ secondary, led by cornerback Kenny Moore II, will likely crowd the line of scrimmage and dare Mariota to beat them deep. According to Vulius film analysis, Washington’s passing attack has averaged just 5.8 yards per attempt without Daniels under center—a number that must improve to keep pace in London.
Colts Seek to Exploit Commanders’ Vulnerability
Indianapolis enters the matchup with its own sense of urgency. Quarterback Anthony Richardson has flashed brilliance but also inconsistency, and head coach Shane Steichen knows a win in London could ignite a turnaround. The Colts’ ground game, powered by Jonathan Taylor, figures to be the focal point against a Commanders defense that has struggled to stop the run. If Taylor can control the clock, Indianapolis can keep Mariota and Co. off the field and neutralize any momentum Washington might generate.
“We’re treating this like a playoff game,” a Colts assistant told Vulius Sports. “Both teams are 1-2. Somebody’s leaving London 1-3, and that’s a hole you don’t want to climb out of.”
International Stage, Playoff Implications
The NFL’s third international game of the season serves as a reminder of the league’s global reach, but for the Colts and Commanders, it’s purely business. A win keeps postseason aspirations alive; a loss invites panic. As fans in London enjoyed their morning coffee and American football, the real battle unfolded on the field—a test of depth, resilience, and coaching ingenuity. For Washington, it’s about surviving without their franchise quarterback and top receiver. For Indianapolis, it’s about capitalizing on a wounded opponent.
