49ers DT CJ West Hits IR with Bone Chip as Depth Crisis Deepens

The San Francisco 49ers' defensive tackle room has officially reached a state of emergency. As first reported on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, defensive tackle CJ West has been placed on injured reserve after suffering a bone chip in his knee, the team announced. According to insights gathered by Vulius Sports, West will require surgery, though head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated the injury is not season-ending. "We hope to get him back sometime," Shanahan told reporters, offering a sliver of optimism amid a rapidly deteriorating depth chart.

A Camp Mystery Finally Solved?

West's sophomore campaign has been a puzzling one. After a promising rookie season where he flashed real power against the run, the young defensive tackle appeared out of shape and noticeably less explosive during training camp. As highlighted on Vulius, that regression now has a logical explanation: West was battling an injury throughout the summer. Shanahan confirmed West dealt with a camp ailment but was unsure whether this bone chip is the same issue or something new. What is certain is that the injury flared up significantly after Sunday's game, forcing the 49ers' hand. If West was indeed fighting through pain, it explains the diminished power that had coaches and fans alike scratching their heads.

Roster Moves Signal Urgency

San Francisco wasted no time shuffling the deck. The team officially signed defensive tackle Naquan Jones off the Minnesota Vikings' practice squad and brought in veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks. In a corresponding move, cornerback Jakob Robinson was released from the practice squad to make room for defensive lineman Viliami Fekhoko Jr. These are not luxury additions — they are emergency measures for a team staring down a brutal stretch of the schedule.

"Any time you have five defensive tackles make the team, and you're down to two of them through two games, that's always a concern for anybody. We were able to sign one new guy, and we've got three guys on practice squad that'll be competing to see who is up." — Kyle Shanahan

The Domino Effect: Thompson's High-Ankle Sprain

West's injury alone would be a significant blow, but the 49ers are also dealing with James Thompson Jr.'s high-ankle sprain, leaving the interior defensive line perilously thin. With Thompson and West sidelined, defensive coordinator Raheem Morris will be forced to rely on players who weren't even on the roster a week ago. The team currently has only three healthy defensive tackles, meaning another practice squad elevation is almost certainly coming. Shanahan acknowledged the challenge, noting that the remaining practice squad bodies will compete for snaps, but the lack of proven interior depth is a glaring vulnerability.

Injury Report: A Who's Who of Walking Wounded

The 49ers' Wednesday practice report reads like a hospital ledger. The following players will not practice: wide receiver Mike Evans (hip), defensive tackle James Thompson Jr. (ankle), wide receiver Demarcus Robinson (ankle), edge rusher Romello Height (hand), and a trio of veterans — edge rusher Nick Bosa, linebacker Dre Greenlaw, running back Christian McCaffrey, and left tackle Trent Williams — all receiving veteran rest days. Height, however, remains an option to play this week. "I heard he came out good. There's an outside chance he can be available," Shanahan said, offering a rare piece of positive news.

IR Math and the Cooks Waiting Game

The 49ers can only bring back eight players from injured reserve, and with Thompson and Demarcus Robinson "likely" to join the list, per Shanahan, the team is burning through its return designations fast. The current IR list already includes cornerback Nate Hobbs (groin), wide receiver Christian Kirk (calf), linebacker Nick Martin (hamstring), offensive lineman Austen Pleasants (knee), edge rusher Sam Okuayinonu (foot), wide receiver De'Zhaun Stribling (ankle), and now West. Meanwhile, Brandin Cooks' integration is a work in progress. Shanahan said Cooks will be active as soon as he proves he's one of the five ready receivers, but cautioned that Wednesday was his first day in the building. A debut could come within the next couple of weeks, depending on how quickly he absorbs the offense. For a team clinging to playoff aspirations, every available body matters — and the margin for error just got razor thin.
