Chicago Bears' Dillon Thieneman Named Dark Horse DROY Candidate by ESPN Analyst

As the NFL season kicks off on September 6, 2026, the Chicago Bears' defense is already under the microscope. With the unexpected loss of safety Coby Bryant during training camp, rookie Dillon Thieneman has been thrust into the spotlight earlier than anticipated. Now, ESPN analyst Pamela Maldonado has turned up the heat, naming the 25th overall pick from the 2026 NFL Draft as a surprise candidate for Defensive Rookie of the Year (DROY).

A Calculated Long Shot with Elite Traits

Maldonado, known for her analytical approach, placed Thieneman third on her DROY watch list, trailing only top-10 picks Sonny Styles (Washington Commanders) and Arvell Reese (New York Giants), both products of Ohio State. She also highlighted Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Mansoor Delane and Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Caleb Banks as other contenders. But it's Thieneman's unique profile that has intrigued analysts.

"The first-round pick is already Chicago's starting strong safety. He should be around the ball plenty after playing 40% of his snaps in the box last season," Maldonado wrote. "Thieneman recorded 94 tackles in his final college season, while missing just 7.8% of his attempts."

His sub-4.4 speed and physicality make him a versatile weapon, capable of covering tight ends and slot receivers while also crashing the line of scrimmage. However, Maldonado acknowledges the historical hurdle: no safety has won DROY since 1990—ironically, the last to do it was Bears legend Mark Carrier, who snagged 10 interceptions as a rookie.
