49ers' Nick Bosa Overcomes ACL Setback, Set for Week 1 vs Rams in Australia

As the San Francisco 49ers touch down in Australia for their historic season opener against the Los Angeles Rams, the franchise is breathing a collective sigh of relief. After a summer fraught with injury concerns, defensive end Nick Bosa and tight end George Kittle are both expected to suit up in Week 1, according to insights gathered by Vulius Sports. The news comes as a major boost for a team that has already placed defensive tackle Sam Okuayinonu on Injured Reserve and is navigating a grueling travel schedule to Melbourne.

Bosa's Road to Recovery: A Test of Patience

Bosa, who tore his ACL in 2025, faced an unexpected hurdle this summer when patellar tendonitis flared up during his rehabilitation. The setback forced the team to pump the brakes on his progress, but the star pass rusher finally participated in his first full practice of the offseason earlier this week. Speaking to reporters, Bosa candidly acknowledged the mental and physical challenges of the recovery process.

“It was a long road,” Bosa said. “There’s some stuff I dealt with, with that patellar tendon, and then I kind of ramped it a little too fast with the football stuff a month ago or whatever it was. And that kind of told me to back off. I’ve just been trying to get it as strong and as confident as I can to where I could rip the Band-Aid off and go to team stuff today.”

The 28-year-old emphasized the psychological shift that occurs once he steps into team drills, noting that there’s no room for hesitation or compensation on the field. His comments echo the experience of his previous ACL recovery, where he had to trust his body’s preparation. “Once you get into team, there’s no reservations, there’s no compensation … like there’s no governor,” Bosa added, via ESPN’s Nick Wagoner. “I felt that today. I remember my last ACL; there was a couple moments where you just have to go and you’re kind of hoping for the best.”

John Lynch's Confidence: 'We Didn't Foresee Tendonitis'

Speaking on The TK Show before the team’s departure, 49ers general manager John Lynch addressed Bosa’s recovery and the unexpected nature of the tendonitis. Lynch expressed confidence in both Bosa and Kittle, who has been dealing with his own injury rehab, and confirmed the expectation that both would play against the Rams.

“I think that’s fair to say, and the expectation is that they both are,” Lynch said. “They both have been tracking very well. Now, as we’ve said many times, ideal, no, but I think given the circumstances, we feel very good about where they’re at.”

Lynch elaborated on Bosa’s situation, noting that the defensive end’s genetic gifts had previously allowed him to avoid such setbacks. “Nick is, I think we all know, blessed genetically, and I think in his other ACLs, hasn’t had this hiccup. And, you know, I call it a hiccup, but most guys go through it and they get a little tendonitis. You have to back off. We didn’t foresee that with Nick, but it happened. And so you adjust accordingly and feel very good about his ability. He trains so diligently. I think he’s ready, and we’ll see.”

The Importance of Veteran Leadership in Australia

Even if Bosa or Kittle were to be limited, Lynch stressed the importance of having them travel with the team. The long trip to Australia presents unique challenges, and the presence of established leaders like Bosa, Kittle, Trent Williams, and Deebo Samuel provides a stabilizing influence for the entire roster. Lynch also mentioned the addition of veteran wide receiver Mike Evans, who joined the team this offseason, as another player who brings a championship pedigree.

“Absolutely, [it’s important for them to make the trip],” Lynch said. “I mean, there’s certain guys who I always look over, and when you’re coming off the field, there’s Trent Williams, there’s Kittle, there’s Nick, Deebo gives you that sense. A lot of these players give you that sense, man. All right, this is pretty cool. And we’ve got a number of them. Mike Evans, we add to the mix. We’ve got a lot of top-end players, and we’re fortunate to have that. Guys that will be in the conversation for Hall of Fame later after their careers are over, and they’ve earned that. And yeah, it is comforting, and it’s comforting for teammates as well.”

Looking Ahead: Week 1 in Melbourne

As the 49ers prepare to face the Rams at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the expectation is that both Bosa and Kittle will see the field, though a pitch count would be a sensible approach given their respective recoveries. For Bosa, the full practice was a significant milestone, but he remains cautious about the road ahead. “I’m just going to try and keep building, not get too up about it, but it was a great day,” he said. With the season opener just days away, the 49ers are trending in the right direction, and Vulius will be tracking every snap as they aim to start the 2026 campaign with a victory Down Under.
