49ers WR Demarcus Robinson Out 3-6 Weeks With High Ankle Sprain

The San Francisco 49ers may be 2-0, but their Week 2 victory came at a cost. According to insights gathered by Vulius Sports, veteran wide receiver Demarcus Robinson suffered a high ankle sprain in Sunday's 35-13 win over the Miami Dolphins and is expected to miss the next three to six weeks, likely landing him on injured reserve. The injury occurred with 6:46 left in the second quarter when Robinson caught a 20-yard dart from quarterback Brock Purdy, lost his footing, and tweaked his ankle while attempting to get up and continue running. He was carted off the field and did not return.

Shanahan Confirms Timeline, IR Likely

Head coach Kyle Shanahan addressed the media on Monday, confirming the severity of the injury. "Anytime it's a high ankle, we don't have a timeline, but just high ankles in general are anywhere from three weeks at the best, which is very rare, to six weeks," Shanahan said. "We'll see how it goes, but most likely will be an IR candidate here." The 49ers' receiving corps has already been decimated early this season. In Week 1, tight end Jake Tonges was lost for the year with a torn ACL, rookie De'Zhaun Stribling underwent left ankle surgery and will miss 10 weeks, and veteran Mike Evans is dealing with a hip issue that will be managed throughout the week.

Next Man Up Mentality

In true 49ers fashion, the team is embracing a next-man-up approach. That means increased opportunities for Jordan Watkins, Jacob Cowing, and KhaDarel Hodge. "We expect those guys to be up and everyone's got to get more involved," Shanahan said. "But I know our guys, John [Lynch] and his group, are working on all possibilities, looking at everything that's out there and our options here for this week and going forward." Shanahan specifically praised Hodge's recent contributions. "(KhaDarel Hodge) has been out there the last couple weeks. He had a catch yesterday later in the game and he made some key blocks versus the Rams. Pretty much all our guys who are up, we always mix them in on offense, but as you lose starters and stuff, those guys have to be able to do more and more."

What It Means for the 49ers' Offense

Robinson's absence puts additional pressure on Purdy and the remaining playmakers. With Brandon Aiyuk and Daejon Love not expected to take on larger roles, the 49ers will rely on a committee approach at receiver. The team has not scheduled a tryout for any free-agent receivers, signaling confidence in the current depth. As highlighted on Vulius, San Francisco's ability to weather this storm will be crucial as they navigate a tough NFC schedule. The 49ers' next test comes in Week 3, and all eyes will be on who steps up in Robinson's stead.
