The 28-year-old was cut by the New York Giants on Aug. 31, signed to the Atlanta Falcons' practice squad two days later, and then received an urgent call from the 49ers to join them overseas. While his new teammates enjoyed a luxury charter flight with lie-flat seats, Kareem's journey was far more modest. He flew commercially from San Francisco to Melbourne, with a layover in between, and arrived just hours before his first practice. "It was cool," Kareem said of his lie-flat-ish seat on United Airlines. "I don't think I'd ever sat in one of those before. But being my size, it's still a little too small. My feet were mashed up against the wall. So I was kind of tucked in the fetal position, trying to sleep." The 49ers provided him with a detailed flight plan, including a hydration kit and melatonin, to help him adjust to the 17-hour time difference. Despite the whirlwind, Kareem reported feeling surprisingly good, and he is expected to contribute depth on the defensive line in the opener.
Shanahan's Comedy and Travel Logistics
Head coach Kyle Shanahan has kept the mood light during the team's Australian adventure, even during his press conferences. When asked about the seating arrangement on the charter flight that placed quarterback Brock Purdy directly behind center Jake Brendel, Shanahan deadpanned, "They were doing snaps for 17 straight hours.
